I am a second career attorney now serving as an Assistant Public Defender (APD) with the Missouri State Public Defender (MSPD) who has repeatedly wanted to create a set of “tools” which mirrored what the military calls “Lessons Learned.*
Click/open here for summary of “lessons learned”
In the context of an Army operation or mission, “lessons learned” refers to the knowledge gained from experiences, both successes and failures, during training, exercises, or real-world combat and contingency operations. The core purpose of capturing lessons learned is to drive continuous improvement and adaptation within the Army.
>Identification: This involves observing and documenting what happened during an operation or mission. It includes identifying what went well, what went poorly, unexpected challenges, and innovative solutions. This often happens through After Action Reviews (AARs) and observations from individuals and dedicated teams.
>Collection: Gathering this information from various sources, including individual soldier feedback, unit reports, interviews, and observations from specialized “lessons learned” personnel.
>Analysis: Examining the collected data to understand why certain outcomes occurred. This involves identifying root causes, patterns, and trends, rather than just superficial observations.
>Dissemination: Sharing these validated lessons across the Army, so that other units, leaders, and decision-makers can benefit from the experiences of others. This is done through publications, databases, training programs, and direct communication.
>Implementation/Integration: The most crucial step. This is about taking the lessons learned and incorporating them into Army doctrine, training, education, leader development, equipment acquisition, and operational planning. The goal is to prevent repeating mistakes and to replicate successful practices.
Two Password Protected ShareSites
The purpose of my ShareSites, which are one-element of a broader set of tools, are to (1) facilitate communication; (2) share lessons learned, tips, & tools; and (3) provide a forum for those fighting the good fight in criminal defense for our clients.
- A daily digest Listserver [separate sign-up];
- A newsletter [separate sign-up]; and
- Chat [separate sign-up].
I’ve created ShareSites for two similar audiences (1) Public Defenders; and (2) Criminal Defense Attorneys. Much of the info is the same. They are password protected, require one-registration, and include Terms and Conditions (T&C).
If you want to have access to the applicable ShareSites, here are are the two Registration/Login pages:
The ShareSites and the other “tools” (which you can access in the ShareSites) are a work in progress. I am open to suggestions but don’t have much free time. Please reach out to admin@myMOpd.com with suggestions, ideas, feedback. If and when approved, there will be updates to this login page below; and the registration and login are always at the bottom of this page.
* I was in the Army for 20+ years as a non-lawyer (1984-2008).
