My two decades of service in the U.S. Army as a non-lawyer and 18 years as a lawyer have uniquely prepared me to serve as a public defender in Missouri (fyi). I am committed to, passionate about, and unafraid of defending constitutional rights, a commitment forged during my military career (1984-2008) as a combat engineer (1988-1999) and strategist (1999-2008), with wartime deployments to Iraq in 1990-1991 (Desert Shield / Desert Storm [fyi]) and 2004-2005 (Operation Iraqi Freedom [fyi]); and tours at the Pentagon (2000-2002 [fyi] & 2005-2008) and the State Department (including Kosovo) in 1999-2000 (fyi).
Upon retiring from the Army, I’ve pursued a second career in the law with the specific intent of continuing a career of public service. For 18 years, I’ve been a litigator in Missouri and federal courts, including significant appellate work.

I am particularly proud of my work vigorously protecting the constitutional and civil rights of vulnerable and underserved clients while challenging authority, including direct representation of the criminal defendant before the Supreme Court of the United States (Missouri v. McNeely, 2013) that upheld our client’s Fourth Amendment rights (fyi).
