Coloring Kindness

Navigating the legal system is stressful for adults, but for children caught in the crossfire, it can be overwhelming and frightening. Often, families have no choice but to bring their little ones to court appearances. Seeing a need for a little more kindness and a lot less anxiety, I bring coloring, puzzle, and short books to give children on court days.

The “Court Box” Mission

Courtrooms are formal, quiet, and—to a child—incredibly boring.

To help ease the tension, I’ve prepped my “Court Box” with inexpensive items designed to keep young minds occupied and calm.

And I also find that their parents or grandparents appreciate the kindness — a bonus.

My routine involves visiting local thrift stores—like the Farmington Ministerial Alliance Thrift Store (and attached Pantry) when my stock gets low. Given the mission of such orgs to help locally needy — this is further bonus.

I look for gently used coloring books, children’s books, puzzle books, and activity guides; and supplement these finds with inexpensive new boxes of crayons from Walmart.
