Obtain your Driving Privilege Status (by phone)

I represent clients facing criminal charges when they charged with “driving while revoked or suspended” which can, under Missouri law (RSMo 302.321) be charged at various levels — from a D Misdemeanor (for a first offense) up to a E Felony (for “on the second or subsequent conviction pursuant to section 577.010 [DWI] or a fourth or subsequent conviction for any other offense”).  The punishment range for a D Misdemeanor (fines up to $500) to an E Felony (1 to 4 years in DOC + fines up to $10,000 or a special term not to exceed one year in the county jail).

Knowing the status of your license is critical; and it can be free and done by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.*

NOTE: You may also find this info “on your current Missouri driver record” which you can get at any license office for a $2.82 “basic fee” + $2.00 processing fee

To get the info for free, simply call the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) Driver’s License Bureau interactive voice response system >

(573) 526-2407

You will first be prompted to:

  1. say or push “1” to enter your MO driver’s license number (MODLN) or
  2. say or push “2” to enter you social security number (SSN)
  3. say or push “3” if you have neither a MODLN nor SSN.

NOTE: Some clients who have not had a valid driver’s license for some time think they have no MODLN. While your old MODLN would still work, not knowing it is fine. Using your SSN works just as well.

Tip: Using your SSN also might be easier because some (or all?) MODLNs begin with letters (A, B, C…) which might be tricky with this system.

After you enter 1 or 2, you will be prompted to “say” your MODLN or SSN

  • for example, if you SS# is 555-66-7777 you would say “five five five six six seven seven seven seven”

If the system does not hear you correctly after a few times you will be asked to use your keypad on your phone.

After you confirm that the system got the correct MODL# or SS#; you will then be prompted to “say” your date of birth number-by-number in the following format: MM  DD YYYY “

  • for example – for July 4, 1976, you would say “zero seven zero four one nine seven six”

If your identity is “verified” you will then be asked what sort of info you want. To get the status of your driving privilege,” enter 2…

  • NOTE: If you know the “status” of your “driving privilege” is “suspended or revoked driving privilege,” you can enter 1 …  but I suggest starting with getting the status of your driving privilege (i.e., enter 2).

At the next prompt, to learn the “status of your driving privilege,” enter 3, and it will tell you if your license is (a) valid; (b) suspended or (c) revoked, etc.

  • White this down.

It will then tell you when you will be “eligible” to get you driving privilege reinstated (e.g., after points expire, etc.)”

  • Write this down

NOTE: The other options allow you learn about “traffic tickets or points” [enter 1]; or learn how to order your “driving record,” [enter 2]
