“Restitution” is money payments to make a victim “whole.” This might be for damages property, medical payments, etc. It is not a “fine” for punishment.
In Ste Genevieve County (SGC) there were Three Options for Payment (in 2025 when I was the sole Public Defender there and wrote this “post”)-
- NOTE: All options require you to provide:
- Your Name
- Your Case number (for example – 25SG-CR00###-##)
1) Best Option (save fees and save a trip to Ste. Gen Courthouse)–Mail
The prosecutor’s website states:
Restitution payments can be made payable to the Missouri Lawyer Trust Account Foundation Ste. Gen Co Prosecuting Attorney (MLTAF Ste. Gen P.A.) in the form of a money order or cashier’s check only.
Mail money order or cashier’s check (NO Cash or Personal Check) to the Prosecutor’s Office:
Ste. Genevieve County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office
55 3rd Street, Room 7
Ste. Genevieve, MO 63670
2) Second Best Option (save fees)–Hand-deliver
Bring money order or cashiers check (NO Cash or Personal Check) to the Prosecutor’s Office:
Ste. Genevieve County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office
55 3rd Street, First Floor (past security screening)
Ste. Genevieve, MO 63670
3) Third (worst) Option (very expensive fees… but quick)-pay-online or pay-by-phone with Credit Card
a) Online. Here is the guidance from the prosecutor’s website regarding online payment:
You can also pay by credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) through a service we use called CourtMoney. If you wish to pay [online] visit www.courtmoney.com and giving them form # 117802 along with your case number.
There are fees for using the CourtMoney service, $2.00 minimum, over $50-4%…. If you use CourtMoney services, your payment typically takes one week to clear. We can only credit your case once the payment clears through CourtMoney.
NOTE: For those who might not be great at math… if your restitution is $1000; and you pay $100 each month for 10 months you will end up paying $104.00 each month for a total of $1,040.00. This is 4% more than the restitution!?)
b) By phone: Again, here is what the prosecutor’s website states:
You can also pay by credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) through a service we use called CourtMoney. If you wish to pay by phone, payment may be made by calling at 1-877-222-4668 … and giving them form # 117802 along with your case number. There are fees for using the CourtMoney service, $2.00 minimum, over $50-4% and additional $3.50 for phone fee. If you use CourtMoney services, your payment typically takes one week to clear. We can only credit your case once the payment clears through CourtMoney.
NOTE: For those who might not be great at math… if your restitution is $1000; and you pay $100 each month for 10 months you will end up paying $107.50 ($100.00 + $4.00 + $3.50) each month for a total of $1,075.00. This is 7.5% more than the restitution!?
