Attorney letter to family and friends of clients

Dear Family and Friends of My Clients,

First, thank you for being there for them. Not every client has a support “TEAM”, and I know for a fact that your support and kindness to them does make a difference.

I want to assure you that while I manage a high volume of cases, your loved one’s or friend’s case is important to me, and I am committed to providing them with a vigorous defense.

Here is how you can best assist them and help me:

  • Focus on Non-Legal Support: You can do the most good by helping your loved one with life’s non-legal challenges—such as housing, employment, healthcare, or family support. Please encourage them to check the Self-Help / TEAM Help Info Page to see how you can collaborate on a recovery or support plan.
  • DO NOT Discuss Their Legal Case: Never speak with your loved one about the facts or details of their criminal case. If they are currently detained in the City Justice Center (CJC) or any other facility, all phone calls, video visits, and mail are recorded and monitored by law enforcement. Anything said during those calls can and will be used against them in court. Attorney-client privilege applies only to conversations directly between your loved one and me.
  • Critical Communications Only: My primary focus must remain on direct legal work and court appearances. If you must reach out to me with urgent information, please send a text or email only. If necessary, I will call you back after receiving your text or email.

Thank you again for your being on your loved one’s or friend’s TEAM, for your support, and kindness.

Sincerely,

Grant R. Doty
Public Defender
